Copy of John Crane Note to William W. Shepperd dated at Montgomery July 7, 1838, almost exactly a year after the town was founded.

   "One Day after date I promise to pay William W. Shepperd on order Fifty one 12/100 Dollars Value received with ten per Cent interest until paid for a/c to Jany 1, 1838. John Crane."

   The back of the note is in C. B. Stewart's own handwiting and bears his signature.  C. B. Stewart records that the note and account were filed with the Probate Clerk on August 15, 1840 by Stewart as Attorney for W. W. Shepperd.  This would be the probate of Captain John Crane's estate.  John Crane was killed in the Cherokee War in 1839.
