No Shannon Trading Post in 1826 - 1830
by: Kameron Searle
A number of "histories" have made claim that Jacob Shannon or his father Owen Shannon were
operating a trading post in what is today western Montgomery County as early as 1826 or 1830. There was no
trading post being operated by Owen Shannon or Jacob Shannon near the current location of Montgomery, Texas in 1826
as poorly researched histories teach. Documents prove that both the Shannons were still living at Ayish
Bayou (present day San Augustine, Texas) in January of 1826 and in the Town and Jurisdiction of
Nacogdoches as late as February and March of 1830.
It is important to note that the Shannons did not receive their Mexican Land Grants from
Stephen F. Austin in what is today Montgomery County until 1831.
In Volume 11 of the Robert Bruce Blake Research Collection "Nacogdoches Archives from the Texas
State Library" translated by Robert Bruce Blake, both Jacob Shannon and Owen Shannon appear in "A List of Free
Males at Aysh [Ayish] Bayou" dated January 9, 1826.

On February 28, 1830, Jacob Shannon applied for citizenship in the town and
jurisdiction of Nacogdoches. This should put to rest the myth that he was operating a trading post near
the present site of Montgomery, Texas during the period from 1826-1830.
